Can you crochet with pets?

“Crochet with pets around? You must be crazy!” But the short answer is yes, you can crochet when you have pets. Easily? No. I personally have 4 cats. They see that beautiful, moving yarn as the longest plaything they have ever seen, and they want it badly! Not to mention it is in their house so of course it belongs to them. How dare we yell at them to not eat our yarn that we probably spent more than we want to admit? The sheer audacity!

Wow I got dramatic there for a minute. Need to step away from the soap opera and back to how to enjoy crocheting around cats. I was able to, for the most part, train my cats to leave my yarn alone while I crochet. Does that mean they never touch my yarn? Of course not! They own everything within my house so of course I have found pieces well chewed and clearly moved about from my piles as evidence of the carnage they reek. But while I’m crocheting, with PLENTY of verbal coaching, I’ve gotten them to ignore my yarn while it is in use most of the time. For instance, my youngest of my clowder, JB loves to sleep in my lap. I can now drape the yarn over her without too much stirring. Of course, I have to do my part and make sure the working yarn is not right in front of her face, but she will sleep soundly as I hook the stitches. My boys, Coal and Blaze, are a bit on the shy side so they have never taken much verbal convincing to listen. They just need a brief reminder the yarn belongs to me and they leave it alone while it is in my presence. And then there is Queen Luna. Oh dear, Queen Luna. She does what she wants, when she wants. She will come over and start grabbing at my yarn, drooling all over it to the point it isn’t usable even after it dries in such a stiff way, it won’t bend to stitch. Even when I tell her to leave my yarn alone, she does as she pleases.

So with that, I leave you with, it depends on your cat. If you have a cat who listens to you and could be told to leave the yarn alone, you can train your cat! If you have a Queen Luna, I understand and am with you in solidarity.
