Is this an Obsession?

Skipping ahead to the end of unspeakable year, 2020, Nana is 92 years old and needs looking after. She lives with her youngest daughter who works full time, and although I also work full time, I have Mondays off. I told my aunt I can be another set of eyes on Nana on Mondays.

During one of these regular visits we were sitting in the kitchen chatting. Although Nana can’t see very well these days, she remembers EVERYTHING. She told me to head upstairs to grab her yarn stash. Directing me to EXACTLY where I need to go and what bag her yarn stash was in.

I brought it downstairs where we dug out the crochet hooks and a ball of yarn each. The chain came back no problem. And yes, I even double backed and worked my way to crocheting a square.

Week after week, we slowly worked on separate projects. In between my visits, I watched YouTube videos of crochet tutorials for new stitches. Treble stitch and the difference between US and UK stitches. (I still dont know why the naming convention is the same for different stitches.) Ooo and learning to crochet in the round was a master class all on its own. Can I tell you how long it took me to figure out the “magic ring”? A “trick” to make crocheting in the round “easier”? Yeah right! I must have watched 10 videos I found 5 times and then some trying to understand this “trick” that some patterns mentioned. After all of that, it was a diagram FINALLY helped me understand how to hold the yarn and make this magic work.

With my memories, Nana's guidance on Mondays and YouTube videos (with diagrams helping along the way), I was a crocheting fiend. Each Monday I would show Nana what I had worked on throughout the week and as we caught up on the week, we would crochet. My aunt would come home calling us “her old ladies” and ask how our day went as we showed off our latest work to her.

As I keep showing off my work to Nana, who seems excited someone has picked up the craft, I keep crocheting. I always carry it around with me, a hook and yarn at the ready in my bag. Even crocheting and walking around the mall, although I don’t recommend it on a weekend or holiday season. 😅 Yup, if you are ever in the need of yarn and a crochet hook, I’ve got you covered.
